  • needles arranged 5 per fascicle
  • needles have blue-green color
  • needle margins smooth (compare with serrated margins of P. strobus), key ID feature
  • needles appear clustered at ends of branches, often pointing forward
  • buds pointed, thin
  • stems green to brown, smooth, very flexible when young and can be tied in knots
  • cones similar to P. strobus
  • habit is a small to medium size tree with pyramidal habit
  • plant will never attain the great size of P. strobus
