  • leaves alternate, large to 2' long, pinnately compound
  • leaves with 12-24 leaflets, dark green
  • leaflets lanceolate, pointed, with serrated margin; fragrant
  • buds round, gray, with hairs; often superposed above leaf scar
  • twigs thick, coarse, gray
  • flowers greenish, inconspicuous, in mid-spring
  • fruit is a nut, rounded, light yellow/green
  • fruit resembles a small tennis ball
  • habit is a medium to large tree with a rounded crown
  • bark is gray-brown, with vertical ridges
