Catalpa speciosa
Northern Catalpa
Located in front of the entrance to the Radcliff Hicks arena.
- leaves deciduous, very large (6"-12" long), opposite
- leaves medium green, cordate base, long pointed tip
- leaves hairy beneath, with long petiole
- leaf scars large, rounded, with visible vascular bundles
- buds opposite, small, round, brown
- buds located at top of leaf scars
- stems stout, thick, reddish/yellowish brown
- stems have large lenticels
- flowers showy, white, bell-shaped, June, in large terminal panicles
- fruit a long green/brown capsule, hanging, prominent and persistent
- habit a medium-sized tree with open, irregular crown
- texture coarse
- bark grey-colored, rough and often peeling with fissures and furrows
