Northern Catalpa

Located in front of the entrance to the Radcliff Hicks arena.

  • leaves deciduous, very large (6"-12" long), opposite
  • leaves medium green, cordate base, long pointed tip
  • leaves hairy beneath, with long petiole
  • leaf scars large, rounded, with visible vascular bundles
  • buds opposite, small, round, brown
  • buds located at top of leaf scars
  • stems stout, thick, reddish/yellowish brown
  • stems have large lenticels
  • flowers showy, white, bell-shaped, June, in large terminal panicles
  • fruit a long green/brown capsule, hanging, prominent and persistent
  • habit a medium-sized tree with open, irregular crown
  • texture coarse
  • bark grey-colored, rough and often peeling with fissures and furrows
