Located between Storrs Hall and the Old Chemistry Bldg.

  • leaves deciduous, palmately compound, 5 to 7 leaflets
  • leaflets obovate, opposite, 4" to 10" long, dark green
  • leaves light yellow/green when unfolding; yellow/brown fall color
  • buds opposite, terminal very large, deep red/brown
  • buds smooth, imbricate, often sticky
  • stems stout, coarse, yellow/brown when young
  • bark dark colored and broken into irregular plates
  • flowers white, in upright terminal panicles in May
  • fruit borne in spiny capsule, 2" diameter
  • form a medium to large tree, rounded, 50' to 75' tall
