Aesculus hippocastanum
Common Horsechestnut
Located between Storrs Hall and the Old Chemistry Bldg.
- leaves deciduous, palmately compound, 5 to 7 leaflets
- leaflets obovate, opposite, 4" to 10" long, dark green
- leaves light yellow/green when unfolding; yellow/brown fall color
- buds opposite, terminal very large, deep red/brown
- buds smooth, imbricate, often sticky
- stems stout, coarse, yellow/brown when young
- bark dark colored and broken into irregular plates
- flowers white, in upright terminal panicles in May
- fruit borne in spiny capsule, 2" diameter
- form a medium to large tree, rounded, 50' to 75' tall
