  • needles deciduous, tree bare in winter
  • needles have stomatal bands underneath, unlike Larix
  • needles borne from spur-like growths along stems
  • spurs longer than Larix with distinct constrictions between annual growth rings
  • cones fall when mature, unlike Larix
  • habit wide-spreading with less twiggy growth than Larix
