  • needles 1.5"-2" long, pointed, lacking petiole
  • needles color varies, green to blue-green
  • needles have 2 stomatal lines beneath
  • needles resemble Abies spp. superficially
  • leaf scar semicircular, not raised
  • old stems smooth, no raised protuberances
  • winter buds long, pointed, brown, imbricate, non-resinous
  • habit pyramidal/conical
  • cones have unusual bracts that extend out between scales
