- needles 1.5"-2" long, pointed, lacking petiole
- needles color varies, green to blue-green
- needles have 2 stomatal lines beneath
- needles resemble Abies spp. superficially
- leaf scar semicircular, not raised
- old stems smooth, no raised protuberances
- winter buds long, pointed, brown, imbricate, non-resinous
- habit pyramidal/conical
- cones have unusual bracts that extend out between scales
