  • needles short, .25"-.75", deep green above and lighter beneath (stomatal lines)
  • needles 2-ranked, borne in one plane
  • needle tips pointed, margins minutely serrated
  • tips of needles short, pointed
  • habit is a pyramidal large tree, branches droop gracefully
  • plant may be seen as a pruned hedge
  • bark fissured/furrowed, brown
  • cones small, to 1" long, bracts do not open fully
  • stems often have cottony white material at base of needles, from Hemlock Woolly Adelgid insect
