  • needles mostly awl-like and pointed, gray-green to green (contrast with J. horizontalis)
  • needles short and borne densely on stems
  • needles have white spot underneath close to union with stem
  • needles lack white lines underneath
  • habit creeping and prostrate
  • texture dense and mounded, looks "soft"
  • cones absent or few
