  • needles mostly scale-like, some awl-like
  • needles dark to medium green in summer
  • needles may discolor slightly to brown in winter
  • needles lack white lines on undersides
  • needles and other plant parts have "cedar chest" smell
  • habit is a large, pyramidal tree
  • fruit are small blue "berries", often borne profusely
