- leaves deciduous, thin, light green, feathery
- leaves borne on deciduous branchlets
- leaves arranged opposite on stems
- leaves turn bronzy in autumn
- buds large, opposite, readily visible
- trunk very straight and upright
- side branches ascending, narrower crotch angle than Taxodium
distichum
- habit very uniform, pyramidal large tree
- trunk has wide, flared base with wide furrows
- bark red/brown, shredding into plates with age
- fruit small, brown cones
