  • leaves deciduous, thin, feathery, 2-ranked on branchlets
  • leaves light green in summer, orange/brown in autumn
  • leaves borne on short, deciduous branchlets
  • buds tiny, difficult to see
  • buds borne alternate on stems
  • habit pyramidal when young, more irregular with age
  • branches extend horizontally from main trunk
  • trunk base swollen, buttressed
  • bark fissured vertically, reddish-brown
  • plant forms odd root extensions or "knees" which grow above soil or water when plant is in wet locale
