- leaves scale-like, appressed to stem, prickly to touch
- leaves bright green in summer, plum/purple winter color
- leaves lack white lines beneath
- branches flattened into sprays, fine textured, feathery
- habit flattened, spreading, groundcover
- plant does not lay directly on ground like junipers
- fruit not found on plant
