lot.
- leaves alternate, sometimes whorled at nodes
- leaves thick, deep green, glossy
- leaves evergreen, though may show damage in winter
- leaves have spiny margins, prominent midrib
- stems have long, prominent spines at nodes
- habit upright, shrubby
- flowers yellow in early spring
- fruit blue/black berry in fall, inconspicuous
