  • leaves alternate, sometimes whorled at nodes
  • leaves thick, deep green, glossy
  • leaves evergreen, though may show damage in winter
  • leaves have spiny margins, prominent midrib
  • stems have long, prominent spines at nodes
  • habit upright, shrubby
  • flowers yellow in early spring
  • fruit blue/black berry in fall, inconspicuous
