- leaves deciduous, alternate,rough, twisted
- stems wildly twisted and contorted
- stems very showy in winter
- habit rounded, to 10'
- flowers (male) overwinter as dangling catkins
- bark smooth, gray
- plant is often grafted; produces straight suckers from below union
