  • leaves deciduous, alternate,rough, twisted
  • stems wildly twisted and contorted
  • stems very showy in winter
  • habit rounded, to 10'
  • flowers (male) overwinter as dangling catkins
  • bark smooth, gray
  • plant is often grafted; produces straight suckers from below union
