  • leaves evergreen, leathery, lanceolate, pointed
  • leaves alternate, dark green; bronze/purple in winter
  • leaves often marred by spots, winter burn
  • stems arching, unbranched, smooth green/red
  • flowers white, urn-shaped, in racemes
  • flower racemes axillary, emerge as "catkins" in early spring
  • fruit are brown capsules, persistent, in racemes
  • habit low, multi-branched shrub, fountain-like
