- leaves evergreen, leathery, lanceolate, pointed
- leaves alternate, dark green; bronze/purple in winter
- leaves often marred by spots, winter burn
- stems arching, unbranched, smooth green/red
- flowers white, urn-shaped, in racemes
- flower racemes axillary, emerge as "catkins" in early
spring
- fruit are brown capsules, persistent, in racemes
- habit low, multi-branched shrub, fountain-like
