  • leaves deciduous, alternate, thin, dark green
  • flower buds globular, imbricate, relatively large
  • vegetative buds smaller, alternate, imbricate, pointed
  • flowers bell-shaped, white, clustered
  • flowers produced in early spring as leaves emerge
  • fruits blue with white film, berry-like, ripen in Summer
  • young stems yellow to red, especially in winter
  • older stems gray, slightly fissured
  • habit multi-stemmed, medium to large shrub
