- leaves deciduous, alternate, thin, dark green
- flower buds globular, imbricate, relatively large
- vegetative buds smaller, alternate, imbricate, pointed
- flowers bell-shaped, white, clustered
- flowers produced in early spring as leaves emerge
- fruits blue with white film, berry-like, ripen in Summer
- young stems yellow to red, especially in winter
- older stems gray, slightly fissured
- habit multi-stemmed, medium to large shrub
