- leaves evergreen, alternate, oblong, clustered at end of branches
- leaf margin minutely serrate
- leaves deep glossy green; new growth reddish
- leaves plagued by lace bugs; yellow/brown color
- flowers borne in drooping inflorescences
- flower buds present all winter
- flowers white, bell-shaped, early spring
- fruit are brown, persistent capsules
- habit multi-stemmed, large shrub
- habit upright, larger than P. floribunda (4'-10')
- bark fissured/furrowed like Kalmia latifolia
