  • leaf margin minutely serrate
  • leaves deep glossy green; new growth reddish
  • leaves plagued by lace bugs; yellow/brown color
  • flowers borne in drooping inflorescences
  • flower buds present all winter
  • flowers white, bell-shaped, early spring
  • fruit are brown, persistent capsules
  • habit multi-stemmed, large shrub
  • habit upright, larger than P. floribunda (4'-10')
  • bark fissured/furrowed like Kalmia latifolia
