- buds alternate, large, woolly, imbricate, pointed
- flowers white, in flat clusters, May
- fruit orange-red pome, in clusters, in Fall, persistent
- bark smooth, gray, with horizontal lenticels, rough with age
- habit is a medium tree, often branching low (20'-40')
- form upright, with rounded canopy
