  • leaves elliptical, deciduous, small
  • leaves alternate, but appear whorled at ends of stems
  • foliar buds alternate, imbricate, very small
  • flower buds larger, ovoid, imbricate
  • flowers bell-shaped, cream with reddish stripes, late spring
  • fruit is a 5-valved, egg-shaped brown capsule (green initially)
  • fruit held upright on recurved pedicel, persistent, looks like a "Dutch pipe"
  • young stems brown/red, slender
  • habit multi-stemmed, upright shrub (6'-12' tall)
  • form unique, often with layered branches
  • plant may become a small tree in time with thick "trunks"
