- leaves alternate, deciduous, oblong or lanceolate
- leaves rich green; red, purple, yellow in Fall
- buds small, globular, imbricate
- young stems olive or red, smooth
- flowers white, bell-shaped, fragrant
- flowers in racemes; produced in late summer
- fruit are brown capsules, persist in racemes
- habit is small tree, drooping branches
- bark scaly, fissured with age, brown
