  • leaves alternate, deciduous, oblong or lanceolate
  • leaves rich green; red, purple, yellow in Fall
  • buds small, globular, imbricate
  • young stems olive or red, smooth
  • flowers white, bell-shaped, fragrant
  • flowers in racemes; produced in late summer
  • fruit are brown capsules, persist in racemes
  • habit is small tree, drooping branches
  • bark scaly, fissured with age, brown
