  • leaves alternate, evergreen, obovate, dark glossy green
  • leaves have few teeth at tip; not as densely borne as I. crenata
  • leaves longer than I. crenata (.75"-2") and also much thinner
  • stems green/yellow when young, gray and smooth with age
  • flowers small, yellowish, late spring
  • fruit black fleshy drupe
  • habit medium to large multi-stemmed shrub
  • habit upright, open with age (unlike I. crenata)
  • plant suckers underground in time to form colony
