- leaves alternate, semi-evergreen or deciduous
- leaves small (1"-2.5" long), elliptic, crenate
- leaves may be lost in harsh winters
- stems smooth brown
- stems have prominent spines on surface
- flowers small, white, in clusters, May-June
- fruit orange-red fleshy pome, showy, persistent in winter
- habit is multi-stemmed shrub, open, irregular
- habit coarse and unkempt if not pruned (often pruned)
