  • leaves emerge reddish, turn green, no fall color
  • leaves have large kidney-shaped stipules at base of petiole
  • stems brown, twiggy, with sharp spines at tips
  • flowers pink (variable), like large apple blossoms
  • flowers in clusters, early spring, showy
  • fruit large yellow/green pome like an apple
  • fruit persist in fall
  • habit is a medium-sized, multi-stemmed shrub
  • shape is broad, rounded with dense mass of branches
