  • leaves alternate, evergreen, obovate, small (less than 1")
  • leaves glossy green; reddish in winter
  • buds alternate, small, oval, imbricate
  • stems thin, lax, brown with peeling bark when old
  • flowers bell-like, nodding, white/pink
  • flowers in May, in short racemes
  • fruit red, fleshy, summer to fall
  • form is low, sprawling groundcover (under 1')
  • habit is a dense mat with age
