- leaves glossy green; reddish in winter
- buds alternate, small, oval, imbricate
- stems thin, lax, brown with peeling bark when old
- flowers bell-like, nodding, white/pink
- flowers in May, in short racemes
- fruit red, fleshy, summer to fall
- form is low, sprawling groundcover (under 1')
- habit is a dense mat with age
