  • Leaves evergreen, opposite (unlike all hollies, genus Ilex)
  • leaves small (under 1"), ovate, smooth-margined
  • leaves glossy green above, light yellow/green beneath
  • leaves may discolor in winter
  • leaves and stems have odor when bruised
  • stems angled, buds borne oppositely
  • flowers fragrant, small, axillary clusters, in early spring
  • fruit a capsule, not fleshy as in Ilex
  • habit multi-stemmed, dense shrub or small tree
