- Leaves evergreen, opposite (unlike all hollies, genus Ilex)
- leaves small (under 1"), ovate, smooth-margined
- leaves glossy green above, light yellow/green beneath
- leaves may discolor in winter
- leaves and stems have odor when bruised
- stems angled, buds borne oppositely
- flowers fragrant, small, axillary clusters, in early spring
- fruit a capsule, not fleshy as in Ilex
- habit multi-stemmed, dense shrub or small tree
