This character separates woody plants according to the visual impact of their fruit, a consideration that includes facets of fruit production, presentation and bright color. Like bark quality, ornamental fruit can add color to the winter landscape and provide valuable sustenance for wildlife. To select for specific fruit colors, use the "Fruit Color" category.

I. Very Showy: Plants that produce fruit of good ornamental appeal which are easily visible from some distance due to size and/or color..

Example: Aronia arbutifolia, Red Chokeberry

II. Mildly Showy: Fruit of limited ornamental impact or a fruit display which may be sparse or partially hidden from view by foliage, etc. Such a fruit display may need to be seen up close in order to be appreciated. Included in this category are many species with uniquely shaped or curious fruit.

Example: Halesia tetraptera, Carolina silverbell

III. Not Showy: Plants in this category either produce no fruit (i.e. -- many hybrids and sterile cultivars) or produce a display that is hidden or inconspicuous due to color or size. Little ornamental value.

Example: Stewartia koreana, Korean stewartia
